EFE is a public company committed to employment stability (in Spain, 97% of contracts are permanent, and almost all are full-time). The agency promotes a quality work environment and fosters its team’s personal and professional development, favoring the reconciliation of professional and personal life.
It is present throughout the national territory and has a network of 16 delegations, 5 sub-delegations, and 10 permanent offices. And it also has an extensive international network of 49 bureaus/offices abroad, located in Europe, Africa, Asia, and—mostly—in the Americas.
People are the company’s main asset. EFE is the world’s leading news agency in Spanish and boasts great multicultural and generational diversity, with professionals of 60 different nationalities who add value to our news service. One-third of the workforce operates in countries outside of Spain.
During the 2024 fiscal year, Agencia EFE continued to promote the professional profile renewal process outlined in the agreement signed between the Company Management and the Intercenter Committee, which began in July 2023. This process, formalized in the Professional Profile Renewal Plan, plays a key role in the strategic direction EFE has set for the coming years. Its main objectives are:
To reorganize and adjust the workforce in line with business needs, to deliver more efficient service while promoting training, upskilling, and professional development of EFE ‘s staff through talent management.
In July 2024, EFE implemented its Remote Work Plan within the framework of the Energy Saving and Efficiency Measures of Order PCM/466/2022. The main goal of this plan is to improve efficiency by organizing remote work within the company and to take a proactive role in energy-saving and efficiency measures within the public sector. This helps reduce energy bills and contributes to the country’s energy security.
Also in 2024, an agreement was reached with the Intercenter Committee for a salary increase for the year, by the regulations and authorization framework established for state-owned enterprises.
In September 2024, negotiations resumed to modernize and adapt Agencia EFE’s collective bargaining agreement to the operational needs of the industry and recent legislative changes. This process is especially significant in continuing the professional profile renewal initiated in 2023 and aligning the company’s labor policies with the transformations experienced in the media and communications sector.
The new Equality Plan (2025–2029), agreed upon in its final form by Management and the Legal Representation of Workers in 2024, was officially registered with the Directorate-General for Labor in February 2025. This new Equality Plan aims to be EFE’s primary tool to continue advancing absolute equality between women and men within the organization. It also reaffirms the company’s commitment to uphold the principle of equality and to use non-sexist language in all its journalistic activities.
Agencia EFE has a Protocol for the Prevention and Response to Sexual Harassment, Harassment Based on Sex, and Moral and/or Psychological Harassment, which is an integral part of the Equality Plan. The agency also provides an Ethics Channel through which any violations of the ethical code or legal infringements within the organization can be reported confidentially, by Law 2/2023 of February 20, which regulates the protection of whistleblowers and the fight against corruption.
In December 2024, a Negotiating Committee was formed to adapt the company’s measures to align with the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community, following the recent entry into force (October 10, 2024) of Royal Decree 1026/2024 of October 8. This decree develops the planned set of measures for the equality and non-discrimination of LGTBI+ individuals in the workplace, as required by Law 4/2023 of February 28, aimed at achieving absolute and effective equality for trans people and safeguarding the rights of the LGTBI+ community.
As a public media organization, Agencia EFE must promote social values of equality and work-life balance. All its actions are structured to fulfill and disseminate this mission, to contribute to a fairer society that respects the rights of all individuals.
Women make up 45% of the total workforce at Agencia EFE, approaching gender parity in a sector where men are still significantly overrepresented.
